SMT 579 Irons

As configured:
Sale price $379.99

The SMT 579 is designed for power and playability through hollow body construction. A 455 Carpenter Steel face is thin enough to flex meaningfully at impact, adding ball speed across the entire hitting area rather than only on center strikes, while classic lines and a slim shape keep the address view clean.

Low center of gravity placement produces a mid to high trajectory with optimal spin rates throughout the set. The sole design improves turf interaction for consistent contact that remains workable in both directions, making the 579 a players distance iron that gives up nothing in shot control.

The 579 suits the player who wants modern distance in a shape that still looks and feels like a proper iron. If the long irons remain a weak point, hybrids are available to replace them when you configure your build.

Key Features:

  • Hollow Body Technology For Maximum Performance
  • Classic Design and Shape
  • 455 Ultra-Thin Carpenter Steel Face Increases Ball Speed
  • Progressive Offset Technology/Workable Shot Shapes
  • Internal Perimeter Weighting Enhance MOI and Helps Improve Accuracy
  • Brush Finish Reduces Unwanted Glare
  • Proprietary Internal Foam Improves Performance, Sound and Feel
  • Hybrids available to replace the 3 thru 5 irons.

Probably the best irons I have played

They are really well made and look great in the bag. They have a great feel even on off center hits. The top line frames the ball nicely,. Well struck shots flew further than expected and had a really nice sound. Overall I would highly recommend these.

I’m a believer

Ok, I don’t normally stray far from a forged blade combo set for the last 20 years, but these clubs are good. I’m kind of pick about the the soles on clubs as I am a ‘Picker’ of the ball can fat soles on irons are a problem for me to play all the touch shots I like to play. I’ve bagged these for about 4 rounds and I can say they hit all the shots I want to hit and have acceptable distance and do not pull to the left. I’m nolonger a single digit HC, but I can still on occasion string a good 9 together. These are a delight to play, I can work them , I don’t get the dreaded ‘SOLE BOUNCE’ from on hard lies… They are forgiving but not so much that it’s always a straight ball flight. Distance wise there are about where i want them for my age. It’s not overly long, not short of my other clubs… but a bit less pulls and pushes. Great clubs

Major brand killer!

As an owner of a set of P790s and G410s, I bought a set of the SMT 579s to mess around with without any major expectations. Clubs came incredibly quick. At setup, swing and follow through the 579s feel exactly like their major brand competitors. I have used these for a few practice sessions and a couple rounds. I haven’t had any “flyers” or “hot shots” off the face. They feel absolutely amazing. For a fraction of the price you are getting an amazing product that matches any of today’s iron technology.

Look Great

These irons look great! Overall finish is top notch. They are foam filled and the weight/plug screw is threaded not a fake screw. Can’t wait to see how they perform.

Love these irons!

I am so glad to have found SMT once again! Used their products back on the early 2000's. These irons are beautiful and feel great. My third round playing them was on our clubs Senior Championship. I didn't win (3rd place), but I did shoot my lowest round of the year, 77. I have a feeling these will be in my bag for a long time!

A Surprising Value Iron Set

I started with the 579 A Wedge. Liked it so much I ordered the 6 thru PW 579. Liked them enough I bought the SMT 3 Utility iron and now just ordered the 579 5 iron head to complete my irons. These are really fun clubs to hit, reasonably forgiving with a rocket off the face performance and terrific value at their price. So glad I took the first leap and where it has led me.

SMT 579 Irons

Got a set, very easy to customise, and met all my needs. The club looks like a butter soft blade, is meant to launch like a cavity back, and in the end plays somewhere in between. It has the higher launch of a CB and is forgiving, but that means it's not as penetrating as it's strong loft suggests. Distance is adaquate (an old Rolls Royce pun...) by 2023 standard rather than exceptional. All in all a very satisifying set!

Amazing @ an Amazing Price

Got a set of the 579 irons for myself. Was so impressed, I bragged to my brother. He got a set. He also loves them. Super workable irons at a real nice price.

Smt 579 iron review

Overall so far these irons have been much more than I expected. You simply cannot go wrong for the price offering. I’ve gamed some other direct to consumer irons and although mostly moderately priced I still feel the value on the smt’s is unmatched. The aesthetics and the performance are top tier. I’ve already had many questions about what’s in my bag, some before ever seeing a shot based on looks, and some when I’m asked “what did you hit there?” And my response usually garners the question of “what the heck are smt’s?” Love these irons I also have the 4 hybrid which I would highly recommend as well. Job well done SMT

Second review 2 yrs later

I don’t normally do 2 reviews of something. But this qualifies a SMT built this set for me. In 2023 I had a set of these irons for a half season, but as I usually do I gave them over to the ‘First Tee’ in the area for the kids. Well I’m retired now, and I needed something that I could trust and I liked these heads a few seasons ago. So I called up SMT and had them make me a set in a Senior shaft and and then a matching set of woods. Well I can say that the irons hit straight and are comfortable with a nice ball height (which was a concern). I’m not going to say I picked up 10+ yards… That does not happen for me on irons. But my knock down shots and pitch shots were dead on as well as a couple of 7 irons for the par 3’s . All in all, these are keepers….. again.

Great irons

Got these with lightweight steel shafts. Outstanding distance and feel. They look great in the bag too. Highly recommended.

Update from last review

I wanted to write an updated review since I bought pw-6 and have a few rounds under my belt with them. These are very forgiving throughout. I hit a couple slightly heavy shots where the ball comes off high on the face and I only lost a few yards of distance off my target. This made the difference in putting for birdie as opposed to trying to get up and down for par because it didn't make it to the green. On pulls or pushes distance was almost always pin high. I would definitely recommend these for just about any handicap or someone that's looking for more forgiveness without it looking super chunky or having heavy offset.
